Cristian Romero was a “rock” in Chelsea win

Tottenham Hotspur strengthened their position in the race for the top four with a 2-0 victory over Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

With two of their rivals on Carabao Cup final duty, the north London outfit registered a second successive win in the Premier League with assistant manager Cristian Stellini deputising in the absence of Antonio Conte.

Oliver Skipp bagged his first-ever goal for the club after he rifled in a ball from outside the area before Harry Kane did what does best by scoring his 18th goal of the season.

It was a fine defensive outing, with the likes of Emerson Royal – who won a whopping seven tackles (the most of any Spurs player in the Premier League this season) – and goalkeeper Fraser Forster.

But the usually erratic Cristian Romero has seemingly turned a corner as he put in a masterclass of a showing.

How did Romero perform against Chelsea?

As per Sofascore, the Argentina international registered the joint-highest rating for any Spurs player (7.6), alongside central defensive partner Eric Dier.

That is, in large, because of the work he put in to guide his team to a clean sheet, having won five tackles and registered two clearances, as well as having one block.

Romero also won a total of ten duels, limiting the Blues’ frontline of Kai Havertz, Joao Felix and Raheem Sterling to a combined two shots on target.

The £165k-per-week titan also did what he could to move the ball forward, helping to contribute towards their attacking fortunes, having managed three successful dribbles, which for context, was more than Richarlison (zero), Emerson (two) and Dier (zero).

Romero’s 57 touches were the fourth-most and translated into an 80% passing success rate, so he was composed throughout, having received five yellows in his last seven top-flight outings.

Such exploits saw plenty around the media praise the £40m-rated enforcer, ranging from writer Seb Jenkins claiming that he was “a rock” to The Athletic’s Tim Spiers describing him as “utterly impeccable” given his usual antics.

Throw in a nutmeg between Havertz’s legs and then it’s pretty clear that Romero had one hell of an afternoon at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Spurs destroyed Chelsea to pile further misery on the under-fire Graham Potter.
