Leeds United are now looking to commence their summer business by signing an impressive, in-demand midfielder for Daniel Farke.
Leeds targeting impressive midfield star
Paraag Marathe may have admitted SCR concerns at the end of the season, but that doesn’t mean Leeds are about to go a summer without signings.
The Yorkshire club, backed by the 49ers, will be aiming to recruit with the same intelligence as last summer, which saw Anton Stach, Noah Okafor, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and others all arrive.
Just who could enter Ellland Road is the question that everyone is asking ahead of the transfer window. If recent rumours are anything to go by, then Harvey Elliott and PSV Eindhoven’s Mauro Junior could be two names to watch.
Elliott is a particularly interesting one. The Liverpool midfielder has returned to Anfield following a disastrous loan spell at Aston Villa, in which his game time was limited as the Villans aimed to avoid triggering a permanent deal. If anyone needs a chance at consistent minutes, it’s the 23-year-old.
It’s not just Elliott on the Whites’ radar, though. According to Africa Foot, Leeds have stormed into the race to sign Antoine Sekongo from USL Dunkerque this summer.
They are joined by newly promoted Hull City, Lille, Toulouse FC, FC Lorient, Stade Rennais, AS Saint-Etienne and Samsunspor as a hectic battle to land the midfielder explodes into life.
At 21 years old, Sekongo is ready for top-flight action after an impressive spell in Ligue 2 and could get exactly that if Leeds turn their interest into a serious offer.
His arrival would hand Farke a young midfielder to potentially replace Ao Tanaka if he decides to depart in the coming months. Recent rumours have suggested that the Japan international’s future is in question, despite strong form at the end of the campaign.
“Outstanding” Sekongo could replace Tanaka
Although some will be quick to point out that Sekongo is yet to enjoy top-flight experience in full, it wasn’t so long ago that Leeds were plucking Tanaka from Germany’s second tier.
Now, with Sekongo expected to make a decision about his immediate future, those at Elland Road could unearth yet another gem to replace their current star.
League stats P90 25/26 | Tanaka | Sekongo |
|---|---|---|
Minutes | 1,314 | 2,533 |
Tackles | 1.85 | 1.35 |
Recoveries | 5.55 | 3.52 |
Goals | 0.14 | 0.32 |
Duels won | 3.56 | 5.22 |
Dubbed “outstanding” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Sekongo would add an extra goalscoring threat to Farke’s midfield without the cost of defensive weakness.
The 21-year-old scored nine goals in all competitions this season and assisted another four. Off the ball, meanwhile, he also won around five duels per game – highlighting how he’s an all-round performer.
It won’t be an easy race to win, but Leeds should attempt to jump ahead of several other sides to land Sekongo’s signature.
