Everton players question WSL’s professionalism after late Tottenham postponement

Everton’s Izzy Christiansen and Megan Finnigan have questioned the WSL’s professionalism, after the Toffees’ clash with Tottenham was postponed less than three hours before kick off due to a waterlogged pitch.

The two sides were set to meet at Brisbane Road at 14:00 on Sunday, but heavy rain in London saw the game officially postponed at 11:45 on Sunday morning because of the condition of the pitch.

Everton supporters travelling down for Sunday’s game would have already been well into their journey down south by the time they received the news of the fixture postponement, with Liverpool to east London a 230 mile, four-hour trip.

“We want women’s football to be elite, visible, with fan bases growing by the week etc etc…” Christiansen wrote on Twitter.

“Postponing games so late doesn’t bode well for the above… Very disappointed about today… Apologies to our travelling fans, hope you get home safely!”

Finnigan quote tweeted news of the fixture postponement accompanied with the words ‘professional league’ and a series of angry emojis. Finnigan’s tweet was retweeted by her Everton teammates Gabby George and Emily Ramsey.

Everton Women’s Supporters Group wrote on Twitter that the news was a ‘shame’ for the travelling supporters – who have made other arrangements and gone to watch the WSL fixture between West Ham and Brighton at the Chigwell Construction Stadium instead.

With the international break taking place next week, Everton face a three-week break between their last WSL fixture – a 3-0 defeat to Manchester United on 30 October – and their next one – the visit of Manchester City on 19 November.

City boss Gareth Taylor is one of a number of WSL managers who have criticised the impact that the number of international breaks has on maintaining rhythm in the league.
