“Stewie” is returning to her home state.
Stewart went to Cicero-North Syracuse High School before attending UConn (a rival of Syracuse University), where she helped lead the Huskies to four straight national titles. Stewart was selected first overall by the Seattle Storm in the 2016 WNBA Draft, won the Rookie of the Year Award and has been named an All-Star four times.
The 28-year-old earned the 2018 MVP Award and led the Storm to WNBA championships that season and in 2020. Stewart won the Finals MVP Award on both occasions and has also won two Olympic gold medals for Team USA.
She has been one of the faces of the WNBA since entering the league nearly seven years ago, and her free agency had become one of the association’s biggest storylines this winter.
Stewart spent recent weeks toying with fans, posting cryptic messages on Twitter filled with emojis to perhaps give clues on where she’d take her talents in 2023.
Stewart also recently made headlines when she brought up the possibility of charter travel being provided for WNBA teams.
Shelburne reported on the issue Wednesday, noting that the forward “made charter air travel a key factor in her free agency.” Per Shelburne, aside from the Liberty and Storm, Stewart was also considering joining the Minnesota Lynx and Washington Mystics.
