What Jail Life Is Like For Nick Reiner As He Awaits Trial On Murder Charges In Parents’ Deaths

Behind the concrete and clanging steel of downtown Los Angeles, there is a version of Nick Reiner’s life that looks nothing like the one he once knew.

Since his arrest in December in connection with the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, Nick’s world has been reduced to a 7-by-10-foot cell inside LA’s Twin Towers Correctional Facility. It’s a stark, quiet existence, heavy with routine and surveillance, and defined by isolation.

According to People on Thursday, Nick is being held inside Tower 2’s high-observation mental health unit, which is reserved for inmates who require constant monitoring and separation from others. He spends all of his time alone in his cell, eating three meals a day in confinement. There is no mingling, no shared space, and no casual human interaction.

According to law enforcement sources who spoke to the mag, the separation is not punitive, but protective:

“The inmates [where he is located] have significant mental health illnesses and need to be kept alone and away from any other people or inmates.”

Inside Twin Towers, his days are governed by the clock. Breakfast arrives around 6 a.m., lunch before noon, and dinner at about 5 p.m. The earlier meals are typically cold, while dinner is hot, and Nick has roughly an hour to eat before a deputy collects his tray directly from inside the cell.

The source even noted that the menu in this unit is considered better than what is served in other LA County jails — a small and strange detail in an otherwise grim picture.

His routine briefly shifted on Wednesday, the day of his long-awaited arraignment. After receiving clearance to attend court, Nick showered early that morning and changed into a brown prison-issued jumpsuit. A couple hours later, he was transported in a marked vehicle to the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center. In court, he entered no plea, and the moment took an unexpected turn when his high-profile attorney stepped away from the case.

That evening, Nick was back at Twin Towers. At 5 p.m., he ate dinner alone under fluorescent lights while dressed in a bright yellow jail shirt and dark blue pants. And although he is no longer on suicide watch and no longer required to wear a suicide-prevention smock, the scrutiny has not eased. The source explained:

“He is still being monitored every 15 minutes and is being recorded when he exits his cell to go to court or for evaluations or other necessary requirements. He is also evaluated each week by our medical professionals like psychiatrists on staff but he did not see one after court.”

Even personal changes happen under supervision. Nick’s buzz cut, seen at the arraignment, was done at his own request by a medical professional inside his cell.

Now, his next court date on the murder accusations is scheduled for February 23 — with a public defender handling the case. And until then, his life will remain suspended alone in a very small room.
