Tom Suozzi’s victory in special election for empty House seat, Letters

The Issue: Former Rep. Tom Suozzi’s victory in the race for New York’s 3rd Congressional District.

Now it’s time for Tom Suozzi to make good on his campaign mantra to “fix this” (“Key Dem gain as Suozzi tops Mazi,” Feb. 14).

Tom, it’s time to fix our border before our great cities go bankrupt and fentanyl destroys the young generation. It’s time to stand up to the “defund the police” crowd. It’s time to fix the crime wave that’s ruining the quality of life for so many.

Winning elections is the easy part. Now it is time to fix the mess we are in.

Kenneth Fitzgerald

Hicksville

A crime and drug epidemic, assaults on police officers and billions spent on illegal migrants — the list goes on.

Apparently this is not only deemed acceptable, but is welcomed and supported by the voters of New York’s 3rd Congressional District.

I used to feel sorry for the New Yorkers who do not accept these horrific conditions, but no more. They refuse to put any work into changing things with their vote.

Joseph J. Grassi

Port St. Lucie, Fla.

I am delighted to see former Rep. Tom Suozzi has regained his seat over a Republican challenger in the special election to replace the totally fraudulent former Rep. George Santos.

This victory further narrows GOP’s tenuous grip on the House majority.

Former President Harry Truman successfully ran for election in 1948 referencing a “Do Nothing Congress.” If he were alive today, perhaps he would call attention to a “do nothing but obstruct” Republican House, which is under the iron-clad grip of former President Donald Trump.

Republicans refused to oust Santos for over 10 months, accepting him and his lies because they needed his vote. They have gotten what they deserved in losing a seat in this special election. Kudos to New York voters.

Mazi Pilip is Jewish and holds Israeli citizenship. Sadly, many Jews remain liberals and still vote blindly for Democrats.

As a Jewish person, it bothers me that Jews are not united. Given President Biden’s recent comments on Israel, it seems his party does not have Jewish interests at heart.

The Issue: Former President Trump’s unprecedented statement about urging Russia to attack US allies.

With his reckless talk of Russia attacking NATO countries who fail to meet their spending responsibilities, former President Donald Trump unfortunately sabotaged an otherwise defensible position (“Why America Needs NATO,” Editorial, Feb. 13).

Europe has taken the United States’ support for granted by not meeting the financial responsibilities for its own defense. Leaders there rebuffed former US presidents yet were willing to have America foot their defense bills. The inside joke is the contempt some EU countries have for our country.

To his credit, Trump called them out during his presidency. To his detriment, his latest cringe-worthy comments took up all the oxygen in the room. If he had been more disciplined, he could have hit it out of the park.

Tony Giametta

Oceanside

Trump has made no secret of his frustrations with NATO. It has been speculated by many pundits that he plans to exit NATO if reelected, just as he would dismantle President Biden’s global crusade against climate change.

In isolating the United States from other countries, Trump seems less interested in regaining the presidency than becoming emperor of the world, a modern-day Napoleon Bonaparte.
