Rosenior hails ‘best in the world’ Reece James after contract extension

Chelsea captain Reece James has signed a new six-year contract keeping him at Stamford Bridge until 2032, with head coach Liam Rosenior hinting the defender had opportunities to leave the club before choosing to stay.

The deal was confirmed by the club ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash with Newcastle. James, 26, becomes the longest-serving player in Chelsea’s current squad by some distance, having joined the West London club’s academy at the age of six.

“I can’t stop smiling because we’ve secured the best footballer in the world in his position,” Rosenior said at a pre-match press conference at Cobham.

“He had many opportunities to leave this club. It’s not just about the size and the stature of the club that he’s come through, it’s about his belief and confidence in what we’re doing and where we want to go. We’ve had many conversations about it. For him to sign a deal and put his faith in us is a massive step.”

Asked why he considers James the best right-back in world football, Rosenior laughed off the question.

“Do I really have to explain that, when you see him play? When you see Reece from afar you admire him. He can play many different positions technically, he can score goals, defend, his athleticism.

“The thing that impresses me most is his humility. You realise why he’s having, and will have, the career he’s had as captain of Chelsea. He will be our leader for as long as I’m here. It has been a really good two and a half months with him.”

James’ previous contract had been due to run until 2028, but Chelsea moved to renew it early to avoid the risk of it entering its final year – a vulnerability that previously cost the club when Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen departed on free transfers to Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively.

“I am over the moon to have extended my contract – Chelsea means so much to me,” James told the club’s official website. “I have always said I want my peak years to be here, and I truly believe we have everything it takes to build on our previous successes.”

Beyond club football, James has his sights set on England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup in North America this summer, having missed both the 2022 and 2024 tournaments through injury.

He returned to international duty earlier this year with appearances in the World Cup qualifying wins over Albania and Latvia, and played in the 2-0 victory over Serbia at Wembley in November after withdrawing from an earlier squad with injury.

The new deal comes amid broader contract activity at Stamford Bridge. According reports, James’ extension is expected to prompt renegotiation requests from several other key players, including Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo and Levi Colwill.

Sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart said in a joint statement: “On behalf of ownership and everyone connected to Chelsea, it is a proud moment for all of us to have Reece extend his contract. He is the leader of this team, both on and off the pitch.”
