Red McCombs was in some ways the prototypical Texan, a boot-wearing giant with a West Texas drawl, who, to use his words, dabbled in everything from automobiles and cattle to oil and gas, broadcasting, insurance, racehorses, motion pictures, real estate and minor league baseball. But business and civic leaders remember him as “one of a kind” because of his influence on business, sports and philanthropy in the Lone Star State.
