The ongoing offseason drama surrounding former The Athletic insider Dianna Russini and New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel has sparked a debate over sports media accountability.
On Tuesday, sports podcaster Tony Farmer pointed out on X what he sees as a blatant double standard from NFL Network reporter Jane Slater. He questioned why Slater has remained silent on the biggest scandal of the NFL offseason.
Thanks for the submission!
“Jane Slater (@SlaterNFL) is an NFL Network reporter. In her own words, Dianna Russini is Jane’s ‘Best girl.’ Might their friendship explain why Slater has tweeted 171 times since April 7 and not once mentioned the biggest NFL offseason story (Russini – Vrabel)?” Farmer tweeted.

Farmer added that Slater had no problem gossiping about Jordon Hudson and Bill B. just one year ago, but has gone quiet now.
Farmer’s tweet exposes the bias regarding how national sports reporters cover their peers. While media insiders routinely break news regarding player arrests, contract disputes, and front-office firings, they have often been accused of protecting members of their own circles.
The Russini-Vrabel controversy began in April 2026, when Page Six published photographs of Vrabel and Russini holding hands and embracing at a luxury resort in Sedona, Arizona.
Despite initial denials from both parties, with Vrabel calling the allegations laughable and Russini calling them misleading, the NFL reporter resigned from The Athletic following an internal investigation.

Marlon Humphrey reacts to Mike Vrabel–Dianna Russini controversy
New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel has received intense public attention since photos of him alongside NFL reporter Dianna Russini at an Arizona resort surfaced online in April. More recently, older videos involving the two have sparked speculation about their relationship.
Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey addressed the situation on May 10. He questioned why social media users were so invested in the rumors. Humphrey joked that while there appeared to be a lot going on, he didn’t understand the obsession surrounding the scandal.
Meanwhile, Russini stepped down from her role at The Athletic on April 14. Despite the controversy, Vrabel is still expected to continue as Patriots head coach. Vrabel reportedly missed the third day of the NFL Draft to seek counseling, though he later returned to team activities and attended Day 2 of the Patriots’ rookie minicamp at Gillette Stadium.
