Newcastle United owners PIF are interested in helping shape the wider game of football, Kieran Maguire has explained.
What’s the word?
The Saudi group took over the club in 2021, and have since overseen a remarkable turnaround following the appointment of Eddie Howe as manager and a number of top-quality signings as a result of their investment.
In addition to improving Newcastle’s fortunes on and off the pitch, they are now interested in rising up the ranks of the European Club Association, with an interest in having a greater influence over the future of the game.
Do Newcastle need to spend this month to get top four?
Yes
No
Speaking to Football Insider, Maguire explained that they want to have a say in the direction of European football in years to come.
“Newcastle’s owners will want to shape the future of the game with a share in the direction of European football going forwards,” he stated.
“They hope to be on the European stage on a regular basis following the takeover and the very impressive form they have shown this season.
“If they can maintain that form, they could begin the process of establishing themselves in Europe as soon as next season.
“Therefore, achieving Ordinary Member status is a logical step forward. It is not over-costly and anything they can do to improve their strategic footing will be key.
“Crucially, by having a vote, you have your voice heard at the highest level.“
The next step
Despite the increased investment, Newcastle’s excellent form this campaign was unprecedented, as they find themselves third in the Premier League with just one loss all season.
If they can qualify for the Champions League, or even the Europa League for the first time since the 2012-13 season, then it would surely boost their owner’s ambitions of rising up the ranks at the ECA.
If Newcastle can become a force on the pitch competing at the highest level, then they expect they could have a bigger impact on the game as a whole.
