Outfielder Jacob Young completed a meteoric rise to the major leagues, moving from Single-A to the Washington Nationals since the start of the season after his contract was selected Saturday.
The Nationals cleared a roster spot when they optioned shortstop Jeter Downs to Triple-A Rochester, while outfielder Stone Garrett was transferred to the 60-day injured list.
Young, 24, started the 2023 season at Single-A Wilmington, then advanced to Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Rochester before getting his first big-league call.
In 112 games across all three minor league levels, Young was batting a combined .305 with six home runs, 58 RBIs and 39 stolen bases this season. The seventh-round draft pick in 2021 out of the University of Florida, who leads the Washington system with 132 hits, played in just four games at Rochester.
Garrett, 27, was batting .269 with nine home runs and 40 RBIs in 89 games before he fractured his left fibula while crashing into the wall Wednesday against the New York Yankees.
Downs, 25, was 2-for-5 in six games with the Nationals this season.
