Do you remember when Michael Cera and Aubrey Plaza dated? Me neither. They met on the set of Scott Pilgrim vs the World and dated for a year and a half, but the pair almost took their relationship to the next level just for a gag.
Michael Cera told Rolling Stone that the couple considered getting married in Las Vegas while they were on a cross-country drive, all so they could get a quickie divorce and get to call each other ex-wife and ex-husband. “We were driving through Vegas, and we almost just spontaneously took a detour and got married,” Cera said. “I think the idea was to then get a divorce right away, so we could call each other ‘my ex-husband’ and ‘my ex-wife’ at like … 20.”
The gag marriage didn’t happen and Michael Cera and Aubrey Plaza ultimately split up, but they remain fond of one another. “We love each other, and we’re still really good friends,” Aubrey Plaza said in a 2016 episode of RuPaul’s podcast. “He’s just a weird little freak, and we speak the same language.” Cera added that he’s hasn’t been surprised that Plaza has found such success. “She’s always been so committed to everything that she does,” he said. “It’s not surprising to me that she’s doing really well. The thing that’s surprising to me is how much she’s producing and putting together projects. It’s amazing. Ingrid Goes West? That was so great.“
Michael Cera and Aubrey Plaza are actually set to reprise their Scott Pilgrim roles for Netflix’s upcoming anime adaptation of the series. The entire original cast is expected to return, including Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Brie Larson, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Alison Pill, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman, Mae Whitman, and more.
Scott Pilgrim director Edgar Wright, who serves as an executive producer on the anime series, said, “One of the proudest and most enjoyable achievements of my career was assembling and working with the dynamite cast of Scott Pilgrim. Since the film’s release in 2010 we’ve done Q&A’s, remembrances and charity read throughs, but there was never the occasion to reunite the whole gang on an actual project. Until now… Original creator Bryan Lee O’Malley, along with writer BenDavid Grabinski have conjured up an anime series of Scott Pilgrim that doesn’t just expand the universe, but also…well, just watch it. I’m more than happy to announce that I have helped coax the entire original cast back to voice their characters on this epic new adventure. You are in for a treat.“
