Man adrift in frigid Russian seas for 67 days survived by consuming rainwater

A Russian man rescued after 67 days adrift in a small inflatable boat within the Sea of Okhotsk described Wednesday how he survived by battling shivering chilly and consuming rain water.

Mikhail Pichugin, 46, had set off to look at whales along with his 49-year-old brother and 15-year-old nephew. However the boat’s engine shut down on their means again on Aug. 9.

Preliminary efforts by emergency providers to find the trio failed. Pichugin’s brother and nephew later died He tied their our bodies to the boat to stop them from being washed away.

Chatting with reporters Wednesday from his hospital mattress, Pichugin described how the boat’s engine broke down after which one of many oars broke, making the boat uncontrollable.

They tried unsuccessfully to draw rescuers’ consideration utilizing the few flares that they had.

“I merely had no alternative. I had my mom and my daughter left at residence,” he added softly.

Docs on the Magadan hospital mentioned he was affected by dehydration and hypothermia however in steady situation.
