After a delayed start due to wet outfield after rain showers, England skipper Jos Buttler won the toss and opted to field first. Put in to bat, Ireland skipper Andy Balbirnie top-scored for his team with a 47-ball 62 while Lorcan Tucker made 34. Ireland set England a target of 158 runs.

Chasing 158, England were down to 105 for 5 wickets in 14.3 overs when it began pouring at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
According to the Duckworth-Lewis method, England were found to be five runs short when the umpires decided to call off the IRE v ENG game.
