Free speech fail

I have only one thing to say regarding the professor who gave a failing grade to the University of Cincinnati student Olivia Krolczyk for using the term “biological woman” (“ ‘Sex’ ed failure,” June 6).

She needs to be fired immediately. Where is the right of free speech in our higher educational system? This should not be tolerated, and the professor needs to be held accountable for this.

Michael Rosano, Staten Island

UWS shelter fight

Leftist Upper West Side residents are up in arms because a women’s shelter for the mentally ill and drug-addicted has been proposed for their neighborhood (“Latest shelter war on the UWS,” June 7).

These phonies advocate for the homeless, the mentally challenged and the drug-addled — until a shelter is going to open in their area.

You see, these hypocrites want shelters opened. Just in your neighborhood, not theirs. They believe they’re better than everyone else. Seems there’s not a more disingenuous, phony hypocrite than a liberal.

Frank Perry, Morristown, NJ

Weed smoke curb

Kudos to the Washington, DC, judge who ruled in favor of limiting the smoking of marijuana when it infringes on the rest of the community (“Blunt ruling on pot,” June 8).

How many times have decent people been engulfed in disgusting clouds of pot smoke as they walk down the street or as they sit in their car next to another car?

In this upside-down world, common sense has been thrown out the window. How did this happen? How did society become so warped? We’ll need many more judges to show the same courage if our society is ever to return to normal.

George Schott, Glendale

Tappan Zee fix

Despite any directional signs you slap along the entrances, locals will staunchly identify the crossing as “the Tappan Zee Bridge” (“Cuomo Bridge rename may be Tappan-ing,” June 8).

In a weak-kneed culture where leaders crumble at any slightest sign of opposition, why are politicians waffling at correcting their mistake and restoring the bridge’s authentic name?

Here’s a suggested solution: In the post-9/11 environment, the engineering planning team decided to replace the old single-span structure with a dual bridge for redundancy. I recommend restoring the Tappan Zee Bridge name to the entire structure and add memorialized names to the two spans.

Those traveling eastbound can drive along the Gov. Malcolm Wilson Memorial Span, named after the Republican governor. The old bridge was subtitled in his memory. Those going westbound can drive along the Gov. Mario Cuomo Memorial Span, named after the Democratic governor. His son Gov. Andrew Cuomo slapped his dad’s name on the new bridge by sneaking in language in a voluminous budget bill called the “big ugly.”

Marc Herbst, Executive Director, Long Island Contractors’ Association, Melville

Pot store scourge

There are so many stores claiming to sell pot, but it’s impossible to tell if they have the legal right to sell it (“Crackdown on cannabiz scofflaws,” June 7).

There are too few legal pot stores, and no one knows which stores have the legal right to sell, so people are unknowingly buying from illegal vendors.

In addition to a list of legal vendors, we need to put padlocks on stores that are selling it illegally. (They aren’t hard to find).

Edward Drossman, Manhattan
