EXCLUSIVE: Goodfellas has acquired international rights for Italian director Marco Perego’s upcoming feature Petrichor for a sales launch at the European Film Market this month.
Valeria Golino (Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Anna, The Morning Show) stars as Sara, a woman whose long-suppressed trauma resurfaces as her father’s death draws near, gradually robbing her of her voice. For years, this unspoken truth has hardened her, shaping her into a woman of precision and emotional distance — a mother who learned survival through silence.
Now, as her son stands on the threshold of fatherhood himself, what was once buried becomes urgent. Seized by a desperate need to be heard and unable to speak, Sara reaches for another language, leaving her son a final message through an act of profound vulnerability.
Described as a deeply personal film, Petrichor explores the generational cost of silence.
The project marks Perego’s second feature following his 2023 immigration-themed poetic film The Absence of Eden and his Oscar-shortlisted short Dovecote, both of which starred Zoe Saldaña.
Perego is also active as a producer, with upcoming credits including James Gray’s Paper Tiger, Andrey Zvyagintsev’s Minotaur, and projects with Cristian Mungiu and Philippe Parreno, Lucretia Martel and Carlos Reygadas.
The screenplay is written by Oscar-winning writer Alexander Dinelaris (Birdman, Digger) and Marco Perego
Golino is joined by Isabella Rossellini, appearing in her first major screen role since her Oscar-nominated performance in Conclave, and Tommaso Ragno (Vermiglio, Nostalgia, Happy as Lazzaro), a renowned stage actor in Italy.
Longtime Steven Spielberg collaborator Janusz Kaminski serves as director of photography. The two-time Academy Award winner (Saving Private Ryan, Schindler’s List) most recently worked with Spielberg on Disclosure. Music is by Nicolas Becker, Academy Award winner for the sound of Sound of Metal and Lexx from Invisibile Mountain
The film shot in Italy over the summer and is currently in post-production. Goodfellas will unveil a new teaser at EFM.
