New Delhi: The European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) will impose extra 25 per cent tax on energy-intensive items exported from India to the EU, a brand new report stated on Wednesday. This tax burden would symbolize 0.05 per cent of India’s GDP, in keeping with the report titled “The World South’s response to a altering commerce regime within the period of local weather change” by impartial assume tank Centre for Science and Atmosphere (CSE).

These findings are based mostly on information from the previous three years (2021-22, 2022-23, and 2023-24).

CBAM is the EU’s proposed tax on energy-intensive merchandise, akin to iron, metal, cement, fertilizers, and aluminum, imported from international locations like India and China. The tax relies on the carbon emissions generated throughout the manufacturing of those items.

The EU argues that this mechanism creates a degree taking part in subject for domestically manufactured items, which should adhere to stricter environmental requirements, and helps scale back emissions from imports. However different nations, significantly creating international locations, are anxious this could hurt their economies and make it too costly to commerce with the bloc.

The transfer has additionally sparked debate at multilateral boards, together with UN local weather conferences, with creating international locations arguing that, beneath UN local weather change guidelines, international locations can not dictate how others ought to scale back emissions.

She stated 26 per cent of India’s aluminum and 28 per cent of its iron and metal exports had been destined for the EU in 2022-23. These sectors dominate the basket of CBAM-covered items shipped from India to the EU. In 2022-23, the exports of CBAM-covered items to the EU made up about one-fourth (25.7 %) of India’s whole such items exported globally, which is critical for the industries working in these sectors.
