At simply six years outdated, Tessie Prevost was key within the desegregation of New Orleans faculties when she attended McDonogh 19 Elementary College in 1960.

Prevost died on the age of 69 on July 6.

She and her two classmates Gail Etienne and Leona Tate, together with Ruby Bridges attending close by William Frantz Elementary College, had been among the many first Black college students to attend a desegregated faculty in Louisiana.

Federal courts had pressured the system to abide by the U.S. Supreme Court docket’s 1954 Brown v. the Board of Schooling choice which discovered segregated faculties had been unconstitutional.

Throughout their time at McDonogh 19 Elementary College, the three confronted hostility from college students and their dad and mom, however fashioned a long-lasting bond.

“Dealing with intense hostility and unimaginable challenges, her braveness paved the way in which for larger instructional equality all through the US,” New Orleans mayor LaToya Cantrell mentioned in a press release.

“Tessie Prevost will probably be remembered not just for her position within the Civil Rights Motion but in addition for her enduring spirit and dedication to a extra inclusive society.”

Leona Tate, 69, spoke with As It Occurs visitor host Peter Armstrong about her buddy, and what they went by collectively. Here is a part of that dialog.

Leona, I am so sorry to your loss. How are you doing?

I am doing good. I do not know, I simply assume I am simply in a state of shock as a result of I simply can’t imagine that our little hyperlink is damaged. You recognize, I am unable to imagine that.

So many people are listening to the tales to recollect Tessie Prevost. What do you bear in mind on today?

I simply bear in mind all that we did collectively and as a baby and at the same time as adults, we keep linked. We did not speak daily, and it may need been not even [every] 12 months, however, I imply, as soon as we did begin speaking, it was like we might by no means cease speaking.

It is simply laborious even, as a result of Tessie was all the time the self-contained one and had her personal thoughts and was warm-spirited and her smile, it was simply nice. She had an infectious smile and he or she was very supportive of family and friends and the issues that we had achieved.

How did you three find yourself being picked as those that built-in [at] McDonogh 19 Elementary College within the first place?

It was picked from a really laborious standards. Our household had utilized to a newspaper article, put an software in for teenagers that lived in a group the place we lived, Black youngsters that lived on this group.

We had been psychologically examined at 5 years outdated. Perceive that it was 140 households that utilized. They solely selected 5 households, however solely 4 participated. It was three of us at McDonogh 19 Elementary College and Ruby Bridges at William Frantz [Elementary School]. And one lady simply did not match within the standards in order that she could not be part of it.

The road that stood out in that entire interview that you simply guys did [with CBS], she mentioned that she felt protected. How had been you feeling that first day?

I felt very comfy, regardless that I did not know what was actually occurring. As a result of once I pulled up in entrance and noticed that mass of individuals, the one factor I might relate it to was {that a} parade was coming, as a result of I knew a parade handed in entrance of the road in entrance of this constructing.

And that is what it appeared prefer to me. It appeared like a crowd of individuals simply ready for the parade to come back. I did not decide up on the anger. I did not decide up on everyone being white.

However I used to be with my mama, , and I do know my mama was strong-willed. She did not take no mess. So I felt very comfy being together with her. After which, the marshals actually made us really feel comfy.

What did the white college students and their households do? How did they react?

I bear in mind attempting to talk to a white lady and it was like I used to be invisible. She did not take a look at me. She did not do something. However their dad and mom began coming in and simply taking them out of sophistication and taking them out [of] the entire faculty. By the top of the day, we had been the one three college students in your entire constructing. And that lasted a 12 months and a half.

So what does a typical day in school turn out to be for you three? I imply, that is a reasonably bizarre technique to undergo faculty.

The one downside we had is we could not play outdoors within the yard. We had faculty identical to a standard faculty day. I imply, we did not go within the cafeteria, we did not eat from the college. We needed to convey our meals and drinks.

We could not see out of the home windows and no one might see in as a result of the home windows had been all papered up.

As a result of there could be demonstrations, I suppose.

Oh, yeah. We might hear all of them day. They had been on the market all day. We might hear them. However as soon as we bought within the constructing and could not see something, we form of finally began tuning it out.

As large as this constructing is, we had been confined to 1 a part of that constructing, and I am positive it was for security causes.

At such a younger age, it’s so laborious for me to wrap my head round what that will need to have been like. What did it imply to you then and looking back, to have Tessie Prevost and Gail Etienne with you in that second?

Nicely, we will need to have created a bond between the three of us the primary day we bought right here, as a result of that whole time we had been ready to be positioned within the classroom, we began taking part in hopscotch collectively on the tiles of the ground.

However we had been ready to know that no matter we did, we needed to keep collectively. Wherever we moved within the constructing, it needed to be all three of us, not simply one in all us.

How do you hope all these folks which are listening to her story and remembering her story, how do you hope they bear in mind Tessie Prevost?

I need them to recollect her as a soldier. I need them to take that torch that she was as soon as a frontrunner of and carry it on. It does not matter who sits subsequent to you, what color pores and skin is subsequent to you, get the schooling you want and simply go ahead.
