Sustainability initiatives seem to be everywhere, and companies regularly incorporate claims into their marketing. Carbon neutral this! Post-consumer recycled that! Solar power! Even eco-friendly dating has found space to shine.
Though 78 percent of American consumers say they want a sustainable lifestyle, according to a study by Nielsen IQ, what does that really mean? And how do we, as shoppers, parse through the endless amount of products and services, which are often laundered by greenwashing? Well, wonder no more.
Here, we’ve compiled a list of the 46 best sustainable products and brands that made the cut after a year of testing and research. They span home and cleaning, fashion, beauty, kitchen and kids—there’s something for everyone and everything in your life.
Plus, we talked to two sustainability experts about how to assess products when you’re shopping and break down a handful of popular certifications often flaunted as proof of being “green.”

Bamboo is a great material because it grows quickly, produces 35 percent more oxygen than trees and consumes 45 percent more carbon dioxide. Cariloha incorporates the material into its bath towels, which are made of bamboo-derived viscose.
Wu tested the bath towel set. Admittedly skeptical at the beginning, they quickly won her over for their fluffy texture and ability to keep odors at bay. (She admits to forgetting to swap out her towels one week, and they seemed as fresh and odorless as they had on day one.) The towels are easy to clean and have held up well in both the washer and dryer.
