Barbie star Margot Robbie to earn $50 million in salary

Margot Robbie stands to earn $50 million in salary and box office bonuses following the blockbuster success of Barbie.

Barbie is proving to be unstoppable at the box office as it has grossed over $1 billion worldwide, so it’s only right that Barbie herself should get a piece of that. Variety reports that Margot Robbie stands to earn roughly $50 million in salary and box office bonuses for Barbie.

In addition to starring in Barbie, Margot Robbie also produced the film through her LuckyChap Entertainment production company. While pitching the project to Warner Bros., she actually predicted that Barbie would gross $1 billion, although at the time she thought she had oversold it. “I think my pitch in the green-light meeting was the studios have prospered so much when they’re brave enough to pair a big idea with a visionary director,” Robbie said. “And then I gave a series of examples like, ‘dinosaurs and [Steven] Spielberg,’ that and that, that and that – pretty much naming anything that’s been incredible and made a ton of money for the studios over the years. And I was like, ‘And now you’ve got Barbie and Greta Gerwig.’ And I think I told them that it’d make a billion dollars, which maybe I was overselling, but we had a movie to make, okay?!“

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie features a star-studded cast which includes Margot Robbie as the title character and Ryan Gosling as Ken. When Barbie suddenly begins to worry about her own mortality, she goes on a journey of self-discovery to the real world, accompanied by a love-lorn Ken. Considering how well the film is doing, you can almost certainly expect a sequel to be announced once the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes have concluded, but it was recently revealed that neither Robbie, Gosling, or Gerwig have deals in place to return for a sequel.

Greta Gerwig, who directed and co-wrote Barbie, also stands to receive a hefty bonus. The film has now become the second highest-grossing movie in Warner Bros. history after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, which ended its theatrical run with $1.342 billion. Will Barbie be able to beat it? As the film is still number one at the box office, I’d bet it can. Barbie is currently playing in theaters, so be sure to check out a review from our own Chris Bumbray and let us know what you thought of the movie as well.
