B-Stock is so excited to welcome Star Doby to the Product team this summer! As a summer teammate, we know Star will be an incredible asset to the company. Star is currently studying Computer Science at Stanford University. Learn a bit more about Star and see her answers to some questions below.
1. What are you most excited to learn at B-Stock?
I’m really looking forward to working on an industrial design team and learning how to collaborate across different teams like product analytics, engineering, etc.
2. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? (Or still want to be!)
I wanted to be a math teacher because I loved math and wanted to help others. My dream has changed but I still want to work within the field of education at some point!
3. What is one piece of advice you’ve been given that has stuck?
Don’t compare yourself to other people. You are on your path. This is a hard lesson to learn but an important one. It’s easy to let comparison make you feel miserable. I try my best to think about my own path and work with what I’ve got!
4. Where can people find you after work or school?
I like to get outside as much as I can, so you might find me on the grass outside lounging in the sun. If not outside, I’m probably inside playing the guitar or piano.
5. What is a hidden talent of yours?
I don’t always sing around my co-workers or peers, but if you take me to karaoke, I can’t resist! Singing is so much fun, especially with other people.
6. What plays in the background while you work (music genre, podcast, news)?
I often listen to chill R&B in the background while I work. It’s chill enough to not distract me but lively enough to keep me awake.
7. Where would you go with unlimited PTO?
I think taking the opportunity to travel is the best way to use unlimited PTO! I would try to surround myself with nature, either by visiting a national park, going to the beach, or just hanging out in a local park.
8. What do you do when you’re stuck creatively? How do you get the creative juices flowing?
I think it’s helpful to try to derive inspiration from unexpected sources. I can talk to friends, go for a walk, surf social media, meditate, etc. I can surprise myself by finding inspiration in different areas. Usually talking with people works best! Music really gets me going. It both stimulates my brain and also helps me feel relaxed.
9. What’s something you’ve accomplished that you’re proud of?
Recently, I was on a software development team with some of my peers at Stanford. We presented a new and improved office hours queue at the end-of-the-year software fair and got 2nd prize! I worked a ton on the UI design and implementation. It was validating to hear from other people that our UI was clean and effective. I felt like a valuable contributor to the team.
10. What is one thing you hope to contribute to B-Stock?
I hope to contribute my perspective to the design team as someone who is analytical, well-versed in code, and passionate about human-computer interaction. If there are any gaps in perspective, I’d love to fill them!
