Amazon workers are slamming the corporate’s return-to-office coverage and plotting their exit lower than 24 hours after CEO Andy Jassy introduced that they have to return to the workplace 5 days per week from January.

Whereas some Amazon staff are ripping into the corporate’s toughened RTO coverage on social media, others are even blasting their employer within the firm’s inside Slack channel.

“Please do observe that that is (in a whole lot of instances) considerably extra strict and out of its thoughts than many groups operated beneath pre-COVID,” one staffer wrote on Slack, in accordance with Enterprise Insider.

“This isn’t ‘going again’ to the way it was earlier than. It’s simply going backwards.”

One other worker recommended they’d quite be placed on the corporate’s aggressive efficiency enchancment plan than adjust to the mandate: “Can I negotiate my supervisor to PIP me… Take my cash and depart?”

Staff aren’t simply speaking about quitting, a small few have already modified their standing on LinkedIn to #opentowork as they freely seek for extra versatile jobs.

“Amazon has introduced 5 day RTO, which is unlucky as a result of I’m serious about working for a dwelling, not live-action function enjoying and advantage signaling,” an Amazon Internet Providers engineer posted on the networking platform.

“In case you have distant alternatives obtainable, please message me. Nothing is off the desk. I’d quite return to highschool than work in an workplace once more.”

A commentator on Reddit who claims to have labored at Amazon for 3 years said that they’re mentally trying out of their present function whereas they hunt for one more.

“In all probability going to comfortable give up and get a brand new job. F—okay Jassy,” the consumer wrote, describing the measure as a “swift kick to the nuts.”

Amazon’s newest RTO mandate

Amazon veteran, Jassy—who took the helm after Jeff Bezos stepped down in 2021—issued a memo to all staffers yesterday that stated they are going to be required to work within the workplace “the way in which we had been earlier than the onset of COVID.”

“Earlier than the pandemic, it was not a given that folk may work remotely two days per week, and that may also be true transferring ahead—our expectation is that folks will likely be within the workplace exterior of extenuating circumstances,” Jassy, who began working on the $1.94 trillion tech large in 1997, wrote.

After all, many individuals moved to the suburbs and made childcare preparations in accordance with the corporate’s present 3 day in-office coverage—or as Jassy places it “arrange their private lives in such a means that returning to the workplace constantly 5 days per week would require some changes.”

That’s why the 56-year-old stated that the brand new stricter enforcement won’t kick in till the brand new 12 months to “assist guarantee a easy transition.”

The CEO added that transferring ahead distant working will likely be reserved for emergency situations like “in the event you or your youngster” is sick.

‘What higher solution to reduce jobs’

Jassy positioned the adjustments at Amazon—which additionally embrace a flattened hierarchy and no extra scorching desking—as a greater solution to work.

“We’ve noticed that it’s simpler for our teammates to study, mannequin, follow, and strengthen our tradition; collaborating, brainstorming, and inventing are easier and more practical; educating and studying from each other are extra seamless; and, groups are typically higher related to at least one one other,” Jassy insisted.

Nevertheless, some disgruntled proffesionals have recommended that the brand new coverage is designed to cut back its present 1.5 million-plus headcount.

“It is a layoff in disguise,” one consumer complained on Reddit. “Return to the workplace otherwise you’re fired and we don’t need to pay any severance or unemployment.”

“What higher solution to reduce jobs than to drive everybody again into the workplace and watch folks give up in droves,” one other wrote.

Amazon didn’t reply to Fortune’s request for remark, together with whether or not the coverage is a thinly veiled headcount discount.

Nevertheless, the corporate has beforehand used its in-office mandate to chop out defiant staff.

Earlier this 12 months, Amazon managers got the inexperienced mild to fireside workers who fail to point out face three days per week within the workplace.

In the meantime the corporate’s “return-to-hub” mandate in July pressured distant staff to select working (and in some instances relocating) to the closest workplace to them—or resign.
