Southwest Harbor, Maine | $949,000

A circa 1900 cottage with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, on a 0.2-acre lot

This house is in Southwest Harbor, a small town on Mount Desert Island. It is less than a five-minute drive from the popular campgrounds, hiking trails and beaches in Acadia National Park, and about the same distance from the late 19th-century Claremont Hotel and from a drugstore, a coffee shop and several seafood restaurants on Main Street.

Bangor, the nearest city, is a little more than an hour away. Augusta, the state capital, is about a two-and-a-half-hour drive. Portland is three hours away, and Boston is within a five-hour drive.

Size: 1,200 square feet

Price per square foot: $791

Indoors: A paved path runs through the yard, stepping up to the small covered porch and the bright green front door.

Inside is a living room with shelves made from salvaged wood; a fireplace with a stone surround and a salvaged-wood mantel; and two sets of doors that open to a screened porch. The living space is open to a dining area surrounded by windows, with a high ceiling and a built-in bench.

Through a wide doorway is a kitchen with a Bertazzoni gas range, galvanized metal countertops, a soapstone sink with brass hardware, and a barn-style sliding door that opens to the butler’s pantry.

The primary bedroom, off the butler’s pantry, has shiplap walls painted a pale green and exposed ceiling beams made from the home’s original floorboards. The primary bathroom is also in this part of the house, along with a door to the backyard.

Two more bedrooms (one with built-in bunk beds) and another full bathroom are on the second floor, reached from a staircase in the living room.

Outdoor space: The house is surrounded by mature trees, with a garden on one side and a stone patio in a far corner of the mostly flat yard.

Taxes: $3,195 (estimated)

Miami Beach | $949,999

A two-bedroom, one-and-a-half-bathroom condominium in a 1947 Art Deco-style complex

This condominium is in a building designed by Lawrence Murray Dixon, a prolific architect who built a number of local hotels and private residences in the 1930s and 1940s, contributing to the city’s Art Deco aesthetic. It is across the street from Flamingo Park, a 36-acre green space with a public swimming pool, sports fields and tennis courts; about a 10-minute walk from a Whole Foods grocery store; and a five-minute drive from the beach.

Driving to downtown Miami Beach or Bal Harbour, the popular shopping and dining destination, takes about half an hour, depending on traffic. Miami International Airport is about 40 minutes away.

Size: 1,440 square feet

Price per square foot: $660

Indoors: The apartment’s front door opens into a sunny living room with built-in seating, large windows and recessed glass shelves that offer display space for books and photos.

Wide-plank wood floors run from the living room into an open galley kitchen with stainless steel appliances and a long island with an integrated sink. On the other side of the kitchen is a windowed dining area with space for a small table.

Both bedrooms are upstairs, reached by a staircase opposite the kitchen with a powder room tucked underneath. One bedroom is straight ahead from the landing, next to a walk-in closet with built-in storage. The primary bedroom is on the other side of this level, with large windows and long pendant bedside lights. Next door is a windowed bathroom with an oversized walk-in shower and a floating vanity. A closet with a combined washer and dryer is also on this level.

Outdoor space: The building grounds are landscaped with grass, palm trees and tall hedges that create a sense of privacy. The communal outdoor spaces include a picnic area.

Taxes: $7,584 (estimated) and a $1,020 monthly homeowner association fee

Seattle | $949,950

A 1904 bungalow with four bedrooms and two bathrooms, on a 0.1-acre lot

This house is in the Wallingford neighborhood, across the street from a gym with rock-climbing facilities and within walking distance of a bakery, a Vietnamese coffee shop and a brewery with an outdoor beer garden. It is about a 15-minute walk from Lake Union and Gas Works Park, where there is a marina, a playground and walking trails around the water.

Driving to the University of Washington takes less than 10 minutes. Downtown is about 15 minutes away by car or 30 minutes on public transit. Vancouver, Canada, is less than three hours away.

Size: 1,541 square feet

Price per square foot: $616

Indoors: This house sits behind a wood fence that encloses its small yard. Beyond the gate is an exterior staircase rising to a small deck off the entry.

The front door opens directly into a living room with large windows and hardwood floors. The hardwood flooring continues through a wide doorway into a windowed dining area.

The adjacent kitchen has white cabinetry, a white-tile backsplash, quartz counters and stainless steel appliances.

One bedroom is on this level, off a short corridor extending from the kitchen. It has the use of a full bathroom across the hall with a combined tub and shower.

Three more bedrooms are on the second floor, reached from carpeted stairs in the living room. The primary bedroom, at the top of the stairs, is large enough to hold a king-size bed and two night stands. The bedroom across the hall is currently used as a home office. The third bedroom has sloped ceilings and enough space for a queen-size bed. All three share a full bathroom with a white porcelain pedestal sink and a shower.

Outdoor space: The yard feels private, thanks to the wood fence, and has plenty of space for chairs and a grill. The deck in front of the house is big enough to hold a table, chairs and an umbrella.

Taxes: $8,340 (estimated)
