New Braunfels, Texas | $295,000

A 1920 cottage with two bedrooms and one bathroom, on a 0.2-acre lot

This house, once part of a church complex, was moved to its current location last year and renovated. New plumbing and electrical systems were installed, and the home was furnished with antique and vintage pieces that are available to buy.

The property is less than a mile from a shopping center with an H-E-B supermarket and about 15 minutes from Gruene Hall, one of the oldest continuously operating dance halls in Texas. Driving to San Antonio takes about 40 minutes. Austin is about an hour away. Houston is a three-hour drive, and Dallas is about four hours away.

Size: 1,185 square feet

Price per square foot: $249

Indoors: The stucco exterior was refreshed during the renovation, and the covered porch is new.

The front door opens into a living room with original hardwood floors and green-painted woodwork. The front of this space is currently set up as a home office; the back is used as a sitting room.

To the left of the entry, through a wide doorway, is a dining room papered in a blue-and-white floral wallcovering. The woodwork and the built-in china cabinet are painted the same green as the trim in the living room.

The dining room and the living room are both connected to a kitchen with blue-gray cabinetry, a Zellige tile backsplash, counters made of butcher block, and a door to the backyard.

Both bedrooms are off a hallway extending from the kitchen. The primary bedroom has custom-made woven window shades and enough space for a queen-size bed and two night stands. The bedroom across the hall currently holds two twin beds. They share a full bathroom off the hallway.

Outdoor space: The fenced backyard is flat, with a mature tree growing near the house. The new concrete driveway has enough space to park two cars.

Taxes: $2,064 (estimated)

Atlanta | $275,000

A one-bedroom, one-bathroom condominium on the first floor of a 1940 building

This building is in the Virginia-Highland neighborhood, near a bustling stretch of Ponce De Leon Avenue. It is about five minutes from a Publix supermarket, a 1939 movie theater, the Emory University campus and the Majestic Diner, which opened in 1929. Springdale Park and a public elementary school named after the park are half a mile away. The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum is a mile away.

Driving to downtown Atlanta takes about 15 minutes. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is about half an hour away.

Size: 692 square feet

Price per square foot: $397

Indoors: This apartment faces the back of the complex. Its front door opens directly into a sunny living room with white walls, hardwood floors, a midcentury-modern-style chandelier and access to a covered balcony.

The hardwood flooring continues through a wide doorway into a dining room that the sellers use as a home office. Off this space is a kitchen with new cabinetry painted a pale gray, a white-tile backsplash and a gas cooktop.

The bedroom, on the other side of the apartment, is big enough to hold a king-size bed and has a nook that contains a stacked washer and dryer. The full bathroom next door has a combined tub and shower.

Outdoor space: The balcony off the living room is paved with brick and has a ceiling fan. There is enough space for a small lounge area as well as a cafe table and chairs. The apartment comes with one deeded parking spot; more off-street parking is available for guests.

Taxes: $957 (estimated) and a $290 monthly homeowner association fee

Omaha | $295,000

A 1925 Craftsman bungalow with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, on a 0.1-acre lot

This house is on a quiet, tree-lined street less than a mile from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. It is about five minutes from the public Field Club Elementary School and from Field Club of Omaha, a private club with an 18-hole golf course. The University of Nebraska Omaha, which has more than 12,000 undergraduate students, is less than 10 minutes away.

Driving to the parks along the city’s riverfront takes about 10 minutes. Council Bluffs, Iowa, is about 15 minutes away. Lincoln is an hour’s drive. Des Moines is about two hours away.

Size: 2,082 square feet

Price per square foot: $142

Indoors: A wood staircase leads up to the front door, which opens into an enclosed porch. From there, a second door opens into a living room with refinished hardwood floors and original cabinets with leaded-glass fronts.

This space flows into a dining area that faces an updated kitchen with new stainless steel appliances, new tile floors, a breakfast bar and a door to the backyard.

Two bedrooms are on this level, off a hallway extending from the dining area; one is currently set up as a home office. They have the use of a bathroom off the hall with a new vanity and a combined tub and shower.

The third bedroom and a sitting area are on the level above, reached from stairs off the hallway.

The lowest level of the house is set up as a den, with a fireplace and a built-in wet bar. A full bathroom and a laundry room with a side-by-side washer and dryer and a vintage-style wall-mounted sink are also on this level.

Outdoor space: The small covered deck off the kitchen steps down to a fenced backyard. The attached garage has one parking space.

Taxes: $4,008 (estimated)
