What’s Happening at New York’s Design Festival?

NYCxDesign, the citywide festival celebrating the beauty of homey objects — including furniture, fabric, lighting and tabletop accessories — returns for its 11th season on May 18-25. Scores of exhibitions, product launches and shopping experiences will carpet the city throughout that week.

What follows are highlights to expect as you prepare to navigate the festival. (These listings have been confirmed at press time but are subject to change. More information can be found at nycxdesign.org.)

May 18

The Knockoff Show

Colony, a design collective, invited 19 of its members to create a prototype on the theme of design-industry plagiarism and the possibilities for integrity.

Dimorestudio

The Milan-based Dimorestudio will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a museum-quality exhibition featuring a capsule collection of one-of-a-kind furniture pieces by its founders, Britt Moran and Emiliano Salci.

Calico

Calico features a botanical pattern by the Brooklyn designer and entrepreneur Jason Miller that’s inspired by the Northern California coast.

Divine Inspiration

The British designer Lee Broom will open the doors to his penthouse showroom in TriBeCa to present his lighting collection, Divine Inspiration, along with accessories and archival work.

In Common With

Founded in 2017 by Nick Ozemba and Felicia Hung, the design studio In Common With will show new outdoor lighting and portable lamps with metal finishes from its Flora series with Sophie Lou Jacobsen.

Atelier Viollet

A master of furniture construction and finishes since 1986, Jean-Paul Viollet invites visitors to his Williamsburg studio for an afternoon of wonder.

Herman Miller

The Michigan-based design company will celebrate its centenary with a showing and sale of rare collectibles.

Flower Power

Chris Wolston’s latest terra-cotta furniture, vessels and lighting are produced from ceramic casts of wax-molded flowers from the designer’s own garden.

RBW

The lighting company formerly known as Rich Brilliant Willing will show off its new Corded lamp, along with other products.

May 19

Lindsey Adelman Studio

The lighting designer Lindsey Adelman’s latest venture, LaLAB, is an experimental platform inspired by desert light. Her new works will be shown in her Manhattan studio.

Mercer Street Block Party

A variety of showrooms will present new collections from Orior Furniture, Calico, the lighting companies Bocci and Roll & Hill and the furniture company Atelier de Troupe, among others.

Areaware Pop-Up

Local design company Areaware’s new furniture includes Pluma stools by Steven Bukowski, Splat side tables by Sophie Collé (shown) and Doko lamps by Talbot & Yoon.

Sculpture Space NYC

Ceramic furniture, vessels, lighting and jewelry by 38 creators — including Harry Allen, Christopher Russell (shown) and Graham Marks — will be on display.

May 20

SoHo Design District

A number of SoHo showrooms will offer extended nighttime hours to host product launches, cocktail receptions and related events. Among them: Boffi and De Padova, Foscarini, Gandia Blasco, Poggenpohl and Scavolini.

Ecophilia

The designer Constantin Boym’s collection of modern habitats for plants and animals will be displayed in an exhibition in Williamsburg organized by Available Items, a gallery in the Hudson Valley.

Assembly Line

Colorful hand-knotted rugs from Salam Hello, a company based in Marrakech, Morocco, will be displayed at the interior design studio General Assembly’s new shop in Brooklyn.

Madison Avenue Design Week

For the first time, about a dozen stores, galleries and showrooms will present a united front of Design Week events.

Design Day at the Yard

The Brooklyn Navy Yard, a manufacturing and innovation hub, will open its doors to more than a dozen fashion, furniture and product design studios for one day only.

The Future of Food on Earth and Beyond

John Anderson, the executive director of technology at the industrial design consultancy Smart Design, leads a panel conversation about innovations for feeding people on Earth and in space.

New Waves

In collaboration with the architect Chet Callahan, the Los Angeles-based product design company Laun Studio presents a furniture collection called Mondos, which is inspired by curving coastlines and rippling waves.

Foscarini

Andrea Anastasio’s Fregio hanging light was inspired by an early-20th-century Italian company called Ceramica Gatti 1928. It will be shown with Chapeaux, a trio of table lamps by Rodolfo Dordoni.

Industry City Design Festival

The 10th Industry City Design Festival will include open studios of artists and artisans. The venue will also host the annual Asian Creative Festival, whose theme is “Be Colorful.”

May 21

International Contemporary Furniture Fair and WantedDesign Manhattan

The opening day of the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, the annual centerpiece of NYCxDesign known as ICFF, is now in partnership with WantedDesign, which emphasizes global creative talent. The joint shows will feature products by more than 400 brands from 25 countries.

DIFFA by Design

The annual exhibition and fund-raiser of the Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS will highlight the theme “Design That Makes a Difference.” Beneficiaries will include God’s Love We Deliver and Alpha Workshops, among other charities.

Heller

Furnishings from the design company Heller by Atlason Studio, Giovanni Pagnotta, and Massimo and Lella Vignelli will make their debut alongside encore pieces by William Sawaya and Mario and Claudio Bellini.

Ralph Pucci

The French designer Elizabeth Garouste’s new plaster-glass pieces will be shown at the luxury furniture company Ralph Pucci International, alongside crystal, stone, bronze and wood designs by Nina Seirafi.

May 23

Generation Paper

Organizers of the “Generation Paper” exhibition at the Museum of Arts and Design will discuss how 1960s paper garments and accessories inspired future fashionistas.

May 24

Unmaking, Making, Remaking

An exhibition will present thesis work by graduate students in industrial design from Parsons School of Design.

Mosaic

Home décor is highlighted at Mosaic, a show and sale of design pieces by LES Collection, Piscina, Casa Patina, Studio Nordic and Luke Malaney. The works were selected by Carly Krieger, a designer from Past Lives Studio whose pieces will also be represented.
