I awoke in the middle of the night recently to find myself pondering what, if anything, the current generation is bequeathing to our youth that entitles us to a sense of pride.
It’s not a culture of gun violence and hatred that continues to escalate as tensions mount between Blacks and whites, liberals and conservatives.
It’s not our callous disregard of climate change that threatens not only our country but the world as a whole.
And what has the current generation ever done to act in a truly bipartisan matter — even when it’s obvious that commonsense legislation is in everyone’s best interest?
Our greatest shame, however, is that we’re leaving behind a growing distrust of our democratic institutions, including the Supreme Court and even the presidency.
It’s no wonder I never got back to sleep that night. Maybe if more of our elected officials became equally restless, these questions could be resolved.
