The legislation which promises as much as $380 million of public money for the Oakland Athletics to establish a home in Las Vegas serves to explain the reason for the cynicism that many harbor toward their government.
The Founding Fathers believed that in order for the police powers of government to be harnessed to compel taxation, the cause had to be extremely compelling. Public funding of a baseball stadium to minimize the burden for wealthy team owners could not ever have met that standard.
The little guy and gal who pay taxes continue to take it on the chin throughout our country, where so many schemes such as this one have been inflicted.
