George Santos has recently been sworn is as a full-fledged member of our nation’s House of Representatives. In fact, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy has even appointed him to sit on two committees.
This is someone who has proven to be a habitual liar. He has openly and clearly lied about his educational background, his work résumé, and even his ethnic heritage. Most surprisingly, instead of admitting to these falsehoods and showing any bit of remorse, he has defiantly acted as if he can lie and get away with it. Anyone with a hint of moral fiber would have already resigned.
In my U.S. Government class, I was taught that our elected leaders should not only represent their districts, but be role models for being the best and the brightest within our society. As the years have gone by, I’ve learned that most politicians try to live up to a higher moral standard, but many have fallen short of that. That’s acceptable, I guess. However, in Santos’ case, has the bar simply dropped too far? As Americans, is this the role model we deserve to have as an elected member of our government, whose salary paid is by our hard-earned tax dollars?
