Team India had a disappointing year in Test matches in 2025. They played 10 games, winning four and losing five, while one of the Test matches ended in a draw. India thus ended 2025 with a win percentage of 40 in the red-ball format.

Team India began 2025 with a six-wicket loss to Australia in Sydney. They exceeded expectations in England, pulling off a 2-2 draw in the five-match series against a strong England side. They won both the Tests against West Indies at home, before suffering a 2-0 defeat against South Africa in their next home series.

While India had an underwhelming year overall in 2025 in Test cricket, there were some memorable performances from their batters. In this feature, we rank the top five Test performances by Indian batters in 2025. Not surprisingly, all of the performances were registered during the memorable tour of England.

#5 KL Rahul – 137 in Leeds

KL Rahul had an impressive tour of England. In five Tests, he totaled 532 runs at an average of 53.20, with two hundreds and two half-centuries. After scoring a defiant 42 in the first innings of the opening Test in Leeds, Rahul followed it up with a sublime 137 in the second essay. The 247-ball knock featured 18 fours as the batter looked in complete control of his knock.

With the knock, Rahul yet again proved why he is such a valuable asset for the team with the bat in away conditions. The knock deserved to come in a winning cause. However, Ben Duckett’s 149 off 170 saw England chase down 371 to win the Test by five wickets.

#4 Ravindra Jadeja – 107* in Manchester

Veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja had a fantastic Test series with the bat in England. In 10 innings, he scored 516 runs at an average of 86, with the aid of one hundred and five half-centuries. While Jadeja scored four consecutive fifties during the course of the series, his ton in Manchester was the most significant knock.

Down 2-1 in the series, India needed to draw the Manchester Test to stay alive in the series. The odds were against India after England responded with 669 to the visitors’ first-innings total of 358. However, Jadeja scored an unbeaten 107 off 185 balls in the second innings to help India draw the Test. The southpaw batted for 218 minutes and added an unbroken 203 with Washington Sundar (101* off 206).

#3 Yashasvi Jaiswal – 118 at The Oval

Team India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal also had an impressive tour of England. In 10 innings, he scored 411 runs at an average of 41.10, with two hundreds and two half-centuries. While Jaiswal’s 101 in Leeds came in a losing cause, the southpaw’s 118 at The Oval resulted in a famous win.

Jaiswal was dismissed for two in the first innings, but made amends with a brilliant hundred in the second essay. India were under pressure in the match as they needed to win the Test to level the series. Jaiswal struck a top-class 118 off 164 balls, hitting 14 fours and two sixes, as India won the thrilling contest by six runs.

#2 Rishabh Pant – 134 & 118 in Leeds

It is no secret that in away conditions Rishabh Pant has been one of India’s most effective batters in Test cricket. The southpaw proved his worth yet again during the tour of England, scoring 479 runs in seven innings at an average of 68.42, with two centuries and three half-centuries.

Pant struck hundreds in both innings of the opening Test in Leeds. The left-handed batter looked in sublime form as he hammered 134 off 178 balls in the first innings and 118 off 140 in the second. Pant broke a few records as well with his memorable twin tons. His effort, however, in vain as India’s bowlers failed to defend a target of 371.

#1 Shubman Gill – 269 & 161 in Birmingham

Team India captain Shubman Gill’s 269 & 161 in the Birmingham Test was the easy choice for the top spot when it came to ranking the side’s best batting performances in the format in 2025. Having taken over as Test captain from Rohit Sharma, Gill scored 147 in his first innings as leader in Leeds. However, India ended up losing the game by five wickets.

Gill, though, came up with a stunning effort in the second Test in Birmingham to help India level the series. He looked near invincible during his 387-ball 269 in the first innings and gave further heartache to England by scoring a fluent 161 off 162 balls in the second innings. The hosts seemed listless in the wake of Gill’s assault and ended up suffering a 336-run defeat.
