PSG confirm record losses for 2021/22 season

Paris Saint-Germain’s record-breaking losses for the 2021/22 season have been confirmed.

Late last year, reports emerged stating that PSG had accumulated huge losses of around €375m, largely due to the cost of building the squad and signing Lionel Messi on a free transfer from Barcelona.

France’s DNCG, the organisation responsible for monitoring the finances of the country’s football teams, have now revealed each club’s financial records, confirming PSG had posted a loss of €368.7m for the year ending June 2022.

Much of that figure can be attributed to a 45% increase in payroll, following a summer which saw PSG sign Messi, Sergio Ramos, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Georginio Wijnaldum, Achraf Hakimi, Danilo Pereira and Nuno Mendes.

PSG spent €797.6m during the 2020/21 campaign, but that figure rose to €1.071bn for 2021/22 – the first time club spending has ever broken the €1bn mark.

PSG’s losses account for over half of the results across both Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, with the net loss for both divisions coming out at €601m – an improvement compared to the €645m lost in 2020/21.

“What is interesting is that half of the Ligue 1 clubs do not post losses and are instead in the positive,” DNCG president Jean-Marc Mickeler revealed to Les Echos.

“These clubs have embarked on a virtuous process to control their cost base, develop their revenues excluding audivisual rights, and reduce their dependence on the sale of players. They demonstrate that they can obtain balanced results with sports performances in line with the investments made.”

Total revenue at PSG added up to €669.6m, with over half of that coming from commercial and sponsorship deals.
