Gov. Joe Lombardo should not force the taxpayers to pay for the private school tuition of his donors’ children.
I grew up in a wealthy family in the 1960s. My parents initially paid for my education at a Catholic school, but they could afford it.
However, all of my neighborhood friends went to the public school, so my brother and I made a deal with our parents and promised that if we could go to the public school, we would go to catechism every Sunday.
At the public school, I found a diverse group of people of many different backgrounds and faiths as well as a wide-ranging curriculum.
The public school was welcoming to all people and provided more opportunities, no restrictions of color, gender and religion and there were a lot more children.
That experience eventually inspired me to become a teacher myself.
Our governor should not ask for money for private schools that primarily children whose families can afford their own tuition and transportation.
Lombardo should be for all the people in his state. Most families are just trying to get by, make a living and give their children the best opportunities possible.
The governor should help ensure that all of Nevada’s children can get that in our public schools. I owe everything in my life to public schools and most of the people in this country do too.
