Premier League side dumped out by League Two strugglers

It was a busy night in the Carabao Cup, with seven third round ties decided. It was also a very bad night for two Premier League sides.

Here is a roundup from all of Tuesday’s games in the Carabao Cup third round.

Bournemouth 4-1 Everton

Everton made 11 changes but still named a strong side for their trip to Bournemouth. However, they were well-beaten by their Premier League rivals.

The Toffees were never able to recover from an early Jamal Lowe strike, and it looked doubly difficult for them when Lowe set up Junior Stanislas to add a second just after half-time.

Demarai Gray briefly gave Everton hope of a comeback, but further goals from Emiliano Marcondes and Jaidon Anthony but the tie firmly to bed.

Brentford 1-1 Gillingham (5-6 pens)

Brentford will be scratching their heads at how they found themselves ejected from the competition at the hands of League Two strugglers Gillingham.

The Bees looked like they were in total control when Ivan Toney gave them an early lead.

However, they were unable to finish off Gillingham, who currently sit 22nd in the League Two table

That opened the door for Mikael Mandron to level late on to take the tie to penalties. The first 11 penalties were perfect, but Mikkel Damsgaard missed the 12th to send Gillingham though.

Bristol City 1-3 Lincoln City

Lincoln caused an upset at Ashton Gate as an early onslaught helped them comfortably beat Bristol City.

Goals from Matthew Virtue and Ben House had the Imps in charge inside the first 15 minutes, leaving Bristol City to chase the game.

The more they pushed forward, though, the more likely Lincoln looked to pick them off, and it was no surprise when Paudie O’Connor added a third early in the second half.

Tommy Conway scored a late consolation for the Robins, who were well beaten on the night.

Burnley 3-1 Crawley Town

New-look Burnley had a familiar old face to thank for their Carabao Cup win over Crawley.

The visitors made the early running and they were rewarded when Dominic Telford put them ahead midway through the first half.

Ashley Barnes immediately got them level, though, and the veteran striker laid on another for Anass Zaroury in with just 11 minutes remaining.

Zaroury added another in injury time for good measure.

Leicester City 3-0 Newport County

A strong Leicester side was in dominant mood as they delivered something of a hammering to Newport County.

The Foxes were in complete control from the very start, and the only surprising thing was that it took them 44 minutes until James Justin was able to put them ahead.

Jamie Vardy added some much-deserved gloss to the result with a late brace.

MK Dons 2-0 Morecambe

MK Dons were able to put their League One struggles on pause to record a welcome 2-0 win over Morecambe.

It was a largely comfortable evening for the home side after Warren O’Hora handed them an 18th-minute lead.

Morecambe could only manage one shot all night, so no one was really surprised when substitute Matthew Dennis put the tie to bed shortly after his half-time introduction.

Stevenage 1-1 Charlton (4-5 pens)

Charlton somehow got out of Stevenage with a win after trailing for most of the night.

Luke Norris put the home side ahead from the penalty spot, and that looked like it would be enough to earn a spot in the next round.

However, Chuks Aneke grabbed an equaliser three minutes from time before Danny Rose missed the crucial penalty in the shootout to send the Addicks through.
