Liverpool have now held talks over a move for a “top class” player, and he is open to a deadline-busting move to Anfield.
Reds eyeing new signing despite emphatic Newcastle victory
There has been plenty of speculation about Arne Slot’s future over the past few weeks, but the Dutchman seemingly hasn’t lost the dressing room, with his side running out emphatic 4-1 winners against Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday.
Slot was left particularly impressed by Ibrahim Konate’s performance, saying after the game: “When he saw all the problems that we had defensively, he called me early this week saying: ‘I want to be back to help the team against Newcastle‘.
“He came back Wednesday, trained twice with us, and today, not only did he score a goal but I think he played a great game and the fans were really appreciative throughout the whole game.”
As the manager points out, he has been left light on options in defence in recent weeks, with Conor Bradley, Giovanni Leoni, Joe Gomez and Jeremie Frimpong all missing the Newcastle game due to injuries.
As such, it would make sense to bring in another defender before the February 2nd transfer deadline, and Liverpool are now advancing in talks to sign Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida, who is currently on loan from RB Leipzig.
RB Leipzig are ready to give the green light, according to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg, and a verbal agreement has now been reached, with Geertruida seemingly keen on a move to Anfield.
The Reds are poised to sign the defender on a loan deal, and there are indications he could be a solid addition to Slot’s squad.

“Top class” Geertruida impressing at Sunderland
Journalist Josh Bunting has certainly been left impressed by the Dutchman’s performances for the Black Cats this season, taking to X to laud him back in October.
The 19-time Netherlands international has been an important player for Sunderland, making 17 appearances in the Premier League, although he has been unable to make it off the bench in the last two matches.
That is arguably a slightly concerning sign, but some of the £85k-a-week ace’s attacking displays for Feyenoord are more encouraging, catching the eye during the 2023-24 campaign.
As such, with Liverpool struggling on the injury front, it could make sense to bring in Geertruida, at least as a stop-gap signing until the summer.
