It’s been over a year since South Park debuted a new special on Paramount+, but the long wait is ending with a new special later this month. Steel yourselves for South Park: Joining the Panderverse, an upcoming event special aimed at bringing the controversial series into today’s climate of inclusive entertainment, but with a few twists. Today’s South Park: Joining the Panderverse teaser finds the South Park crew becoming different genders, ages, and races, charting new territory for the crude-and-calculating animated powerhouse.
Here’s the official description for South Park: Joining the Panderverse:
“Cartman’s deeply disturbing dreams portend the end of the life he knows and loves. The adults in South Park are also wrestling with their own life decisions as the advent of AI is turning their world upside down.”
South Park: Joining the Panderverse premieres on Paramount+ Friday, October 27, in the U.S. and Canada, and the next day in the U.K. and Australia. It’s the fifth special made for Paramount+ after South Park: Post Covid, South Park: Post Covid: The Return of Covid, South Park: The Streaming Wars, and South Park: The Streaming Wars Part 2.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter in 2021, South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone said they’re unafraid of being canceled. Given the premise of the new special, the duo’s stance on remaining in the game despite living in an era of knee-jerk cancelations feels relevant.
“We have been waiting to get canceled for 30 years,” Stone admits. “It changes who is involved with it. But we have been dealing with this shit the whole time we have been making the show. And we can’t complain. Things have been going fine for us. It gives us fodder and gives us something to talk about.”
