IPL 2024: The rumours turned out to be true, and it’s a done deal now. All-rounder and Gujarat Titans’ (GT) captain Hardik Pandya has been officially traded to his former franchise, Mumbai Indians (MI), in a deal carried out as per the existing player fees. After Pandya’s exit, India opener Shubman Gill has been named the captain of GT. In another big deal on Monday, Australian all-rounder Cameron Green has moved from MI to RCB.

In a transfer saga that lasted more than 72 hours, Pandya’s trade can be considered as one of the biggest in terms of the player’s status in the history of IPL. Pandya has been a momentous figure for the past two seasons for GT, as he led the team to a fairytale start in its debut season in 2022, when the Gujarat team won the coveted IPL trophy. He also led the team to the IPL 2023 final, when GT lost to MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Amid all the rumours surrounding him leaving GT, he was named on the retention list by Titans after the retention window was closed at 5 PM on Sunday, November 26. So, his move to MI startled the cricket fraternity.
However, it was learned that, due to the delay in formal paperwork, officials from IPL and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) didn’t give the green signal to the move.
As per a quote given to PTI by a senior BCCI official and an IPL Governing Council member, “Yes, Hardik’s trade-off got completed after 5 pm. The deal is now formalised, and he is an MI player. It’s been a tripartite, all-cash deal. MI has traded their all-rounder, Cameron Green, to RCB in an all-cash deal. After that, they had the requisite funds to settle an all-cash deal with Gujarat Titans and procure Hardik’s services.”
