Republicans may be setting a trap for Fulton County (Ga.) District Attorney Fani Willis, and here is how it may unfold:
According to The Hill, a new Georgia law permits the removal of a district attorney for, among other things, “conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice that lowers the reputation of the office.” This law goes into effect Oct. 1.
Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, chairs the House Judiciary Committee. He wants to investigate ties between Willis and special counsel Jack Smith. He subpoenas Willis for information.
Willis notes that Jordan previously refused to comply with a subpoena issued to him as part of the House committee investigation of the Jan. 6 insurrection. Thinking that turnabout is fair play, Willis declines to comply with Jordan’s subpoena.
Willis’ refusal to comply with the subpoena serves as the basis for Georgia Republicans to remove her from office. A Republican attorney is installed in her place, and that attorney kills the Georgia prosecution of Donald Trump. They justify removing Willis by saying that her refusal to comply with a subpoena is “conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice that lowers the reputation of the office.”
The key for Willis is to politely comply with any lawful subpoena.
