“You want to condemn him?” XYZ Films has revealed the first look teaser trailer for an Argentinian horror film called Deus Irae, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Pedro Cristiani. He is adapting his own 2010 short film about a “secret order of evil-fighting priests” called the Deus Irae, who “protect the frail boundaries which separate this world from the mystical realm of darkness.” One of the most acclaimed horror films this year is another Argentinian creation called When Evil Lurks – lots of great horror coming out of Argentina these days. Premiering soon at Argentina’s Mar Del Plata Film Festival, Deus Irae follows Father Javier, who is part of the trio of excommunicated priests who hunt the possessed to exorcize them under their own terms: with Bibles, fire and shotguns. “Pedro is an immense talent and Deus Irae is a totally unique work.” Starring Pablo Ragoni, Gastón Ricaud, and Sabrina Macchi. Oh yeah this seems gnarly. It’s not so easy to reinvent the exorcism subgenre nowadays, but at least they’re trying something new here.
Here’s the first look teaser trailer for Pedro Cristiani’s Deus Irae, direct from YouTube (via Variety):
Father Javier (Pablo Ragoni) lives a fractured existence: on one side, he helps families who’ve witnessed miracles, and on the other he belongs to a trio of excommunicated priests (including Gastón Ricaud and Sabrina Macchi) who hunt the possessed down to exorcise them under their own terms: with Bibles, fire and shotguns. But when the only way to crush Evil is by becoming something even worse… How much of your own humanity – or your sanity – are you willing to sacrifice in order to defeat the Devil? Deus Irae is both written and directed by Argentinian filmmaker Pedro Cristiani, directing his first feature film after writing the script for Moebius (1996), plus directing a few other shorts and projects previously. It’s adapted from his own 2010 short film of the same name. Produced by Molino Studio and Hudsonman. XYZ Films is handling sales and repping the project on its festival run. The film is premiering at the 2023 Mar Del Plata Film Festival this fall. No other release dates are set yet – stay tuned for more. First impression? Look good?
