NAPLES, FL USA – Community School of Naples (CSN) baseball team recently had the pleasure of travelling to Italy to play a series of baseball games against 3 Italian club teams.
The high school team, led by Head Coach, Chad Ott and Assistant Coach, Mark Cardillo, spent a week touring Rome, Florence, Parma, Venice, Milan, and Verona and played against Nettuno Baseball Club, Crocetta Baseball Club, and the Milano 1946 Club. Cardillo is a Realtor at Gulf Coast International Properties and previously played and coached baseball in the Italian Baseball League for 5 years.
Baseball, typically thought of as a strictly American-based sport, has a growing worldwide following. CSN’s trip follows the recent World Baseball Classic, an international tournament of men’s national teams founded in 2006 and held every 4 years.
CSN won 9-5 against the Crocetta team in Parma and again against Milano game with a 10-5 final score. The Nettuno game was held as a scrimmage. Locally, Nettuno is known as “Baseball City”. It’s where the American soldiers taught the game of baseball to the locals and the name, and love for the sport, has stuck ever since. Baseball is more important than soccer to the Nettunese.
Cardillo states, “It was such a pleasure to bring this amazing young group of athletes to Italy and to allow them the experience of not only playing against Italian baseball players, but also to visit some of the most cherished landmarks in the country. It’s an experience they will remember for the rest of their lives.”
