Bridging platform Connext has launched an upgrade that will allow developers to build cross-chain applications, according to an official blog corroborated by a recent report on The Block.

After 1 year of R&D, we’re excited to announce that Connext’s Amarok upgrade is live!

Connext becomes the ONLY solution that:

🔐Maximizes security for any bridging path: the most trust-minimized xchain protocol – EVER

⚙️Is a platform to build xApps

The upgrade, dubbed Amarok, is live and was inspired by the cross-chain messaging platform’s desire to improve on-chain user experience (UX) and help developers build cross-chain applications.

The Amarok release will also enable decentralized finance (DeFi) transactions like liquidity providing while alleviating liquidity fragmentation challenges.

5/ dApps today often force users into fragmented experiences where information, funds, and users are relatively siloed on a single chain, and moving between chains is cumbersome.

This type of UX is not good enough to reach a billion users. But thankfully, we can do better. ✨

— Connext🐺is Live! (@ConnextNetwork) February 2, 2023

To overcome these limitations, Connext allows developers to permissionlessly build cross-chain-native applications (xApps) on the ConnextNetwork, which can abstract away the “chain” entirely for the user, providing a seamless user experience that spans multiple chains.

Highlighting the importance of cross-chain applications, Connext founder and CEO Arjun Bhuptani said:

Today, when you search for cat videos on YouTube, you don’t need to know anything about Google’s complex distributed database infrastructure. You just interact with the app.

Cross-chain applications like physical bridges connect two points, facilitating communication between two blockchain networks. To do so, the application facilitates the transfer of data and digital assets. While the two chains could have distinct protocols, rules, and governance structures, the bridge provides a safe means for both chains to interoperate, communicate, and share data.

Blockchain bridges can be structured to interchange data, including smart contract calls and decentralized identities.

Connext’s Amarok To Deliver Enhanced Developer Experience

Developers creating DApps have often suffered negative experiences because of issues like slow transaction processing rates and high gas fees, particularly during high traffic and congestion. The severity of these issues is heightened when security becomes a concern for the developers.

However, Connext’s upgrade, Amarok, will change that, enabling those same tokens to be processed on other blockchains faster, more affordably, and more securely.

Connext always had a straightforward mission: Help bring Ethereum to a billion users. Our mission comes from a belief that blockchains can become the backbone of a more secure, fair, and transparent internet, unlocking new ways for people to coordinate.

Developers from different blockchains can continue working together to create new user platforms.

Connext’s Amarok Is Unique: Bhuptani

Bhuptani explained that despite many other bridges in the crypto sector, all working towards solving the same issue, Connext’s new product Amarok stands out for delivering better security and trust assumptions.

According to the Connext executive, cross-domain communication is a complex topic that suffers a lot of misinformation and propaganda courtesy of bridge projects. Accordingly, it has a “high potential for disaster if done incorrectly.”

The term “cross-chain messaging” describes how blockchains or applications send messages and transactions to each other.

As of late, the bridging sector has gained a lot of attention, with Uniswap Foundation’s Executive Director Devin Walsh saying earlier this week, “Uniswap’s cross-chain governance proposal receiving the most of this hype “in recent memory.”

Uniswap Cross-Chain Governance Proposal

The Uniswap Foundation’s executive director Devin Walsh has said a cross-chain governance vote amassed “more attention than any Uniswap proposal in recent memory.”

The post followed an intense discussion to decide which bridge (the protocol used to connect bridges) will be used to link Uniswap with Binance’s BNB Chain. Wormhole thrived in a community “temperature check” that garnered significant participation from the public and private stakeholders, including some of DeFi’s most high-net-worth backers like a16z and Jump.

In a written statement by Walsh, “final Governance vote will move forward with the results of the most recent Snapshot Poll.” This means that they will not count any votes voiced outside the Snapshot poll in the results, with Walsh noting that the proposal to launch Uniswap v3 on BNB Chain will proceed to the final governance vote with Wormhole as the selected bridge.

Uniswap’s Wormhole vs. LayerZero

After Wormhole, startup LayerZero came second in the vote, arguing in a Tuesday statement, “in light of sentiments expressed by Uniswap stakeholders, it was the preferred bridge out of the group.” Therefore, the startup proposed that the foundation hold a vote to determine the winning option between Wormhole and LayerZero.

According to Walsh, the Uniswap Foundation has identified a clear opportunity to deliver a better process for future cross-chain deployment proposals. To this end, she has invited feedback on a proposal for a cross-chain bridge assessment group, highlighting that the debate on bridge selection exposed the dire need to introduce an improved process for bridge selection. It also highlighted the need for more research “into bridges for governance, and bridge-agnostic solutions for protocols.”

In closing, Walsh said she hoped the learnings and the new processes to be created thereafter would be a value-addition to more seamless, standard processes and technological solutions for the good of other protocols when they consider launching across other chains.
