Looking to extend on what has been a real purple patch, Rennes will welcome Montpellier to Roazhon Park on Sunday afternoon.
Starting with the hosts, while Rennes might have been frustrated to have thrown away their three-goal lead away at Fenerbache earlier in the week, Bruno Génésio’s side have cruised their way to the knockout stage of this season’s Europa League. Only continuing to gain a string of plaudits since opening the 2022/23 campaign, the Brittany-based outfit are in the midst of a 13-match unbeaten run across all formats. With that stellar purple patch stemming all the way back to August 27th, Sunday’s hosts also have an attacking talisman enjoying quite the free-scoring run. Once again finding the net away in Turkey a few days ago, Martin Terrier has now bagged eight goals in his previous 10 appearances. Likewise, recording a brace in Rennes’ 3-2 victory against Lyon on October 10th, the 25-year-old should be looking to extend on his tally here.
As for the visitors, while Rennes might be enjoying an extended purple patch, the same cannot be said for a struggling Montpellier. Freefalling their way out the top-half of the Ligue 1 table, La Paillade have now lost each of their previous four top-flight contests. Last seen getting hit with a 2-1 loss at home against Lyon, Sunday’s guests could be set for a tough challenge at Roazhon Park. With their recent nightmare spell underlined by a 4-2 drumming away at Toulouse when returning from September’s international break, Montpellier are showing some extended issues at both ends of the pitch. It should also be noted, along with another 4-2 defeat when they last faced off against Rennes back on February 25th, the Occitanie-based outfit have lost five of their previous six meetings against the Champions League hopefuls.
