Charles Town, W.V. | $425,000

A 1940 Colonial Revival house with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, on a 0.5-acre lot

This house sits on a wide, tree-lined street near the center of Charles Town, less than a mile from a brewery, a used book store and a local history museum on Washington Street, the city’s main drag. It is about a mile from Old Opera House Theatre Company, established in 1911 and housed in a late 19th-century building, and within walking distance of a drugstore, a diner and a coffee shop.

Harpers Ferry is about 15 minutes away by car. Driving to Baltimore or Washington takes about an hour and a half.

Size: 2,796 square feet

Price per square foot: $152

Indoors: A path made from stones repurposed from a Harpers Ferry bridge leads from the street to the front door, which opens into a foyer with hardwood floors and a staircase to the second floor.

To the right is a living room with a wood-burning fireplace and a wall of built-in bookshelves. Across the foyer is a dining room with a crystal chandelier and built-in corner china cabinets. The dining room connects to a kitchen with quartz counters and stainless steel appliances, including an electric range. A sunroom and a full bathroom with a walk-in shower are also in this part of the house.

All three bedrooms are on the second floor, reached from the staircase in the foyer. To the right of the landing is the primary suite, which has a bedroom with a built-in window seat and a bathroom with a combined tub and shower. The other two bedrooms, across the hall, overlook mature trees in the backyard.

Half of the basement is partially finished; the other half has ample storage space and a side-by-side washer and dryer.

Outdoor space: A greenhouse and a toolshed are behind the house. The sloping backyard also has space for a table and chairs. The detached garage holds two cars.

Taxes: $1,308 (estimated)

Holly Springs, Miss. | $419,000

An 1858 Greek Revival house with three bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms, on a 0.4-acre lot

This home, known as Hilltop, sits at one of the highest points in the city, on what was once a natural spring. The sellers, who bought the house in 2016, have won preservation awards for their work on it, which included installing a new roof and updating the kitchen, bathrooms and HVAC system, while retaining much of the original woodwork.

It is around the corner from a museum dedicated to the life of the journalist Ida B. Wells-Barnett and half a mile from a popular barbecue spot. The University of Mississippi is about 40 minutes away. Driving to Memphis takes about an hour.

Size: 3,880 square feet

Price per square foot: $108

Indoors: The front lawn is enclosed by a low wrought-iron fence, and the home’s double front doors are framed by a covered porch with a blue ceiling.

Inside is a long foyer terminating in a staircase to the second floor. To the left of the foyer is a library with a gas fireplace and tall bookcases. To the right is a living room with original moldings, tall windows and a decorative fireplace with a marble surround. Through a wide doorway is a dining room with another decorative fireplace.

The dining room connects to an updated kitchen with custom-made cabinets, granite counters and space for a dining table. Also in this part of the house are a powder room and a mudroom with a washer and dryer and backyard access.

The primary suite is on this level, off the main hallway and the library. The bedroom has a Venetian glass chandelier; the bathroom has a combined tub and shower.

The other two bedrooms are upstairs. One has sloped ceilings and enough space for a queen-size bed and a desk; the other is currently set up as a home office. They share a full bathroom with a walk-in shower and a wood vanity.

Outdoor space: The property is landscaped with a flat lawn, raised garden boxes, mature pecan trees, a young maple tree and mature hedges along the back fence. There is also a dog run. The carport has three parking spots.

Taxes: $3,828 (estimated)

Washington | $414,900

A one-bedroom, one-and-a-half-bathroom condominium in a 2023 building

This apartment is in a new building in Carver Langston, in the northeastern part of the city, near the United States National Arboretum. It is half a mile from Langston Golf Course and Driving Range, built in 1939, and within walking distance of an elementary school, a high school and a playground. An Aldi grocery store, a CVS pharmacy and a shopping center with a Safeway supermarket are also nearby.

A bus that stops a few blocks away makes the trip to Union Station and the United States Capitol Complex in about half an hour. Driving to Dupont Circle or Arlington, Va., also takes about half an hour.

Size: 816 square feet

Price per square foot: $508

Indoors: A paved path runs from the sidewalk to a shared front porch.

The apartment’s glass front door opens into a living room with light oak floors and large windows. This space is open to a kitchen with a breakfast bar, white cabinetry and stainless steel appliances from LG. A powder room is off the kitchen.

The bedroom is at the end of a hallway extending from the kitchen. It has two large closets, a door to a balcony and an en suite bathroom with a combined shower and bathtub and a sleek vanity. Next door is a den that could be used as a home office or nursery. The hallway is lined with closets, one of which holds a stacked washer and dryer.

Outdoor space: The balcony is big enough to hold chairs and a small table. From there, spiral stairs lead down to a shared courtyard.

Taxes: $3,828 (estimated) and a $180 monthly homeowner association fee
