Westport, Conn. | $1.994 Million

A 1707 Colonial with three bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms, on a 0.8-acre lot

While this Fairfield County home has been expanded since it was constructed in the early 18th century, the owners have taken care to preserve and even augment its character: An early 1990s addition, for example, was built using repurposed materials from a circa 1850 home.

The property is close to the center of town, about a five-minute drive from popular shopping and dining centers, and 10 minutes from the well-ranked public Staples High School. Driving to Hartford or Midtown Manhattan can take an hour and a half or more than two hours, depending on traffic.

Size: 2,730 square feet

Price per square foot: $730

Indoors: The house is set back from the street, behind a low stone wall and a wide lawn.

The front door opens into a foyer with a staircase to the second floor straight ahead. To the left is a living room with rough-hewed, beamed ceilings, a fireplace and original wide-plank wood floors. To the right is a dining room with another fireplace and access to a butler’s pantry that connects to the kitchen, which has a Viking range and pale green cabinetry.

The kitchen is open to a family room with yet another fireplace and windows overlooking the grounds. Around the corner are a powder room and a room the sellers use as a workout space.

Another set of stairs leads from the family room up to the primary bedroom, which has sloped ceilings and a fireplace with a delft-style tile surround. The primary bathroom, next door, has a combined tub and shower.

Behind a door with iron strapping is a hallway that leads to a second-floor den and the other two bedrooms. One bedroom has a paneled wall painted mauve; the other, currently used as a home office, has an en suite bathroom with a walk-in shower.

Outdoor space: The side and rear yards are landscaped with grass and mature trees, and are flat enough to accommodate a swimming pool or small structure. The detached garage has two parking spots.

Taxes: $15,024 (estimated)

Ocean Grove, N.J. | $1.995 Million

An 1879 Victorian house with four bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms, on a 0.1-acre lot

This house is in a Monmouth County town listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its numerous well-kept Victorian homes. It is less than a 10-minute walk from the Great Auditorium, an 1894 building with its original lighting and one of the world’s largest pipe organs, and less than a five-minute drive from Ocean Grove Beach, a wide stretch of sand popular with locals and weekenders.

The boardwalk at Asbury Park is also five minutes away by car. Trenton is less than an hour away. Driving to New York City or Philadelphia takes about 90 minutes.

Size: 3,506 square feet

Price per square foot: $569

Indoors: The front courtyard is private, sheltered from the street by a gate and tall hedges. Stairs lead up to the covered porch, and the front door opens into a foyer with herringbone floors and a staircase to the second floor.

To the right is a family room with tall windows offering a view of Wesley Lake. To the left is a parlor with two chandeliers, more street-facing windows and a fireplace with an ornate black mantel. The back half of this room is set up as a dining area.

The kitchen, behind the parlor, has a Viking range, a white porcelain farmhouse sink and a white subway-tile backsplash. A powder room is also in this part of the house.

Three bedrooms are on the second floor. The primary suite, to the right of the stair landing, has a fireplace, built-in storage, windows overlooking the neighborhood and a bathroom with a walk-in shower, a claw-foot tub, marble tile and radiant-heated floors. The two guest rooms, at the other end of the hall, share a bathroom with a deep tub and a separate shower.

The fourth bedroom is on the third floor, off a den with beamed ceilings and a fireplace. A full bathroom with a combined tub and shower is also on this level.

A media room, a home gym and a laundry room are in the finished basement.

Outdoor space: Thanks to mature hedges, the front porch and yard feel private. A patio at the base of the exterior stairs is currently furnished with a sofa, rocking chairs and two small tables, and the covered porch above also has room for furniture, making for an ideal outdoor sitting room.

Santa Fe, N.M. | $1.995 Million

A recently renovated 1991 house with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, on a 0.2-acre lot

This house was gut renovated by the owners, who installed new electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems, as well as a new roof, new windows and new floors. It is across the street from Patrick Smith Park, which has a playground, basketball courts and picnicking space, and a 10-minute walk from a teahouse, a wine bar and a restaurant housed in a 1750s adobe home.

Santa Fe Plaza is about five minutes away by car. Los Alamos History Museum is a 45-minute drive. Albuquerque is about an hour away. Driving to the ski slopes in Taos takes about 90 minutes.

Size: 8,355 square feet

Price per square foot: $941

Indoors: A low stone wall separates this property from the street, and steps lead up to a wide covered porch.

The front door opens into a living area with high, beamed ceilings and white-oak floors. The sitting area, on the left, is anchored by a fireplace surrounded by white subway tile. The dining area, on the right, is open to a kitchen with a marble-topped center island and stainless steel appliances. A butler’s pantry and a laundry room with tile floors are off the kitchen.

From the center of the living area, a hallway extends to all three bedrooms. The primary suite, at the back of the house, has a fireplace with a raised hearth, a glass door that opens to a patio, and a bathroom with terra-cotta tile floors, a porcelain soaking tub and a shower with a glass door.

The other two bedrooms are off the hallway, with walk-in closets and enough room to hold queen-size beds. They share a bathroom with a separate tub and shower.

Outdoor space: The front porch and patio have brick floors laid out in a herringbone pattern, with room for chairs and a small table. Behind the house are two parking spots and an area enclosed by a wood fence that has the potential to become a garden or patio.

Taxes: $4,044 (estimated)
