Bodega Bay | $1.6 Million

A 1989 shingle-clad house with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, on a 0.6-acre lot

This house is about a mile from the Pacific Ocean, with views that also stretch east to the hills beyond the Russian River. It is a five-minute drive from beaches popular for surfing, swimming and fishing, as well as several waterfront restaurants and a fish market. Doran Regional Park and the Links at Bodega Harbour, an 18-hole golf course, are less than 10 minutes away.

Santa Rosa is a 45-minute drive. Healdsburg is an hour away. Driving to San Francisco takes about 90 minutes.

Size: 2,277 square feet

Price per square foot: $703

Indoors: The house is set back from the street, behind a gated driveway. A flight of stairs leads up to a covered porch, and the front door opens into a foyer with a staircase to the second floor.

The living room and kitchen are both upstairs. The living area has a wood-burning fireplace with a stone chimney; sliding-glass doors that open to a wraparound deck; and space for a dining table beside a floor-to-ceiling Palladian window. The kitchen has tall windows that fill the space with light and enough space for a breakfast table.

More stairs lead from the center of this floor to a sunny loft that could be used as a home office or additional guest space.

A short hallway off the kitchen leads to the primary bedroom, which has high, wood paneled ceilings, sliding-glass doors that open to the deck and an en suite bathroom with a deep soaking tub surrounded by windows.

The other two bedrooms are on the lowest level of the house, off the entry. Each is big enough to hold a queen-size bed, and they share a full bathroom with a combined tub and shower. A wine cellar and a sunroom currently used as a den are also on this level.

Outdoor space: The deck off the main level is spacious, with room for separate sitting and dining areas, and ocean views in the distance. The attached garage holds two cars; there is room to park more in the driveway.

Taxes: $20,004 (estimated)

Santa Monica | $1.6 Million

A 2012 townhouse with three bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms

This townhouse is in a four-unit complex about half a mile from Santa Monica College. It is a five-minute drive from Heal the Bay Aquarium, the Santa Monica Pier, the popular oceanfront workout equipment at Muscle Beach and the Third Street Promenade, an outdoor shopping and dining center. Also nearby are a Trader Joe’s and Bay Cities Italian Deli & Bakery, known for its oversized hoagies.

Downtown Culver City is 15 minutes away. Driving to the University of California, Los Angeles campus or Century City takes about 20 minutes. Los Angeles International Airport is a half-hour drive.

Size: 1,515 square feet

Price per square foot: $1,056

Indoors: The entrance to this townhouse is through a subterranean garage with direct access to a private stairway that leads to the living room.

This space is open, with polished concrete floors, areas for sitting and dining, doors that open to two patios and access to a powder room. The adjacent kitchen, separated from the sitting area by a long breakfast bar, has granite counters, stainless steel appliances and pendant lights.

All three bedrooms are on the second floor, reached from stairs in the living area. The primary suite has a bedroom big enough to hold a king-size bed and a desk; a closet with a built-in storage system; and a bathroom with a double vanity and a walk-in shower. The other two bedrooms are at the end of the hall; they share a bathroom with a deep tub and a separate shower.

The townhouse is equipped with a Nest climate-control system.

Outdoor space: The home includes a private roof deck, reached from stairs on the second floor. This space is big enough to hold a sofa and a table, and offers views of the city and the Santa Monica Mountains in the distance. The subterranean garage holds two cars.

Taxes: $20,004 (estimated) and a $550 monthly homeowner association fee

Long Beach | $1.6 Million

A 1948 ranch house with three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a detached cabana with a full bathroom and a studio with a full bathroom, on a 0.2-acre lot

This house was built for an ophthalmologist in the late 1940s and has retained its period charm, with midcentury features that include a mirrored bar, teak paneling and sunken bathtubs in the primary suite and the cabana. It is about a mile from a large park, in a bustling neighborhood with shopping and dining options along nearby stretches of Atlantic Avenue and Carson Street. Public elementary and middle schools are within a five-minute drive.

The Port of Long Beach and the campus of California State University, Long Beach are about 20 minutes away. Driving to downtown Los Angeles or Disneyland, in Anaheim, can take 30 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic.

Size: 3,220 square feet

Price per square foot: $497

Indoors: A neat row of hedges divides this property from the sidewalk, and a paved path leads across the lawn to the bright orange front door.

To the left of the foyer is a living room with an original fireplace and large, street-facing windows. To the right is a dining room with a starburst-style chandelier. This space connects to a kitchen with white cabinetry, original tile counters, a sunny breakfast nook with built-in storage, and access to a laundry room and full bathroom.

The family room, off the other side of the kitchen, has a corner fireplace with a raised hearth and a curved stainless steel bar with wood paneling and mirrors. The sunroom, behind the family room, has floor-to-ceiling windows looking out on the backyard and wood doors that open to a small den that could double as a guest room.

The primary suite, added by a previous owner, is off the sunroom. The bedroom has floor-to-ceiling windows and a glass door that opens to the backyard; the bathroom has more floor-to-ceiling windows along one side of a sunken tub and shower. The other two bedrooms, off another side of the sunroom, share a full bathroom.

The cabana, across a tiled patio from the house, is papered on the walls and ceiling with a banana-leaf print and has a sunken tub in the center, finished in green and red tile. Another detached building with a full bathroom could be used as a home office.

Outdoor space: The property includes a private backyard, planted with mature trees and hedges, an in-ground swimming pool and a two-car garage.

Taxes: $20,004 (estimated)
